Why do we take our products outside?
Mother Medusa headquarters is currently nestled into the vast rural expanses of the Canadian prairies. We take much of our brand inspiration from the breathtaking landscapes, forestry, flora, and fauna that quite literally surrounds us.

With these ever-changing natural backdrops, textures, and lighting we can’t help wanting to immerse ourselves in it as often as possible. Hiking and nature photography was already a regular facet of this lifestyle. Why not bring our products with us? The privacy of this isolation provides us ample opportunity to explore new nooks and crannies, looking for settings that harmonize best with each individual product.

The 3 biggest challenges of outdoor photography
Despite having access to this landscape, making the best use of it comes with its own trials and tribulations.
- Lighting. The biggest challenge with natural lighting is a bright and sunny day. It causes light to glare off of stone and metal surfaces as well as oversaturates the backdrops. This leads to a loss of definition and detail and a whole lot of editing! Our goal is to do as little editing as possible. For this reason, photo sessions need to be planned for early mornings or evening with overcast.
- Weather. If you’ve ever visited the Canadian prairies you know how unpredictable our weather can be. The countryside frequently experiences high winds, sometimes seemingly out of nowhere. We are very accustomed to products being blown off their surfaces and chasing Ziplock bags across the property. Even the forested areas will not prevent this. Naturally many beautifully overcasted days come hand in hand with higher winds. The rain can also be spotty and unpredictable which risks tarnishing metals like silver and copper.
- Seasons. We experience some of the harshest winters on this planet. Extreme cold is a major hindrance and it can be exceptionally tough to plan around it. By this time of year almost everything is covered by snow. We can continue to take outdoor photos of apparel and accessories modeled on a bust, but to get to a nice backdrop often involves snowshoeing and freezing fingers. For small jewelry, rocks can be taken inside to use as a substitution until the snow melts. Throughout the spring much of the land will be mud and slush, but that’s nothing a good pair of rubber boots can’t handle.
In summary
We are passionate about marketing our products the way they will be seen on our customers outside in the world and we welcome the obstacles that come with that. When our headquarters moves to the EU this summer we look forward to adapting to and getting to know the new landscapes and challenges it will present.
